Meet the Candidates: Kamala Harris & Tim Walz

DISTRICT & DESCRIPTION
United States President & Vice President

WHY ARE WE RUNNING FOR OFFICE

Harris and Walz are running so they can continue to protect our freedoms, deliver justice, and expand opportunity so that every American can not just get by, but get ahead.

PRIORITIES

Harris and Walz will lead the charge to protect fundamental freedoms, including the right to an abortion and the right to vote. They will fight to bring down costs for American families — on housing, health care, childcare, college, and more. They are also committed to bolstering vital alliances against tyranny abroad — and stopping would-be
authoritarians and dictators at home.

Other important priorities include:
* Raising wages
* Criminal justice reform
* Climate action
* Infrastructure investments
* Election security

HARRIS BACKGROUND

Vice President Harris was born in Oakland, California. As the daughter of immigrants, she grew up surrounded by a diverse community and a loving extended family.

* In 2004, Vice President Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco where she was a national leader in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.
* In 2010, Vice President Harris was elected Attorney General of California where she oversaw the largest state justice department in the country. She took on those who were preying on the American people, winning a $20 billion settlement for Californians whose homes had been foreclosed on and a $1.1 billion settlement for students and
veterans who were taken advantage of by a for-profit education company.
* In 2017, she was sworn into the United States Senate where she championed legislation to fight hunger, provide rent relief, improve maternal health care, expand access to capital for small businesses, revitalize America’s infrastructure, and combat the climate crisis.
* In 2021, Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President – the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected to this position. Vice President Harris has proudly represented the United States on the global stage in meetings.

WALZ BACKGROUND

A lifelong Midwesterner, Governor Walz grew up working on his family farm.

* In 1981 at age 17, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served for 24 years. Walz attained the rank of command sergeant major near the end of his service
* In 2005, Walz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota’s 1st congressional district. He went on to serve six terms. While in Congress, he focused heavily on job and economic issues important to his district. As a member of the House Transportation Committee, Walz supported the stimulus bill as an opportunity to work “with his congressional colleagues to make job creation through investment in public infrastructure like roads, bridges and clean energy.”
* In 2018 Walz was elected Governor of Minnesota and won re-election in 2022. As Governor, Tim Walz cut taxes for working families, lowered the cost of insulin and eliminated junk fees, and protected women’s right to choose. In 2023 he signed a bill making school meals universally free for all Minnesota children.
